What is your favorite lens?

October 7, 2016

Last year I changed camera brands and found myself in need of a new portrait lens. I compared the lenses that Nikon and Sigma had to offer and chose Sigma’s 50mm f/1.4 Art Series Lens.

The maximum aperture of f/1.4 lets in tons of light and gives a very shallow depth of field. This makes this lens ideal for both low light photography and portraiture. Unlike most wide aperture lenses the 50mm 1.4 Art is very sharp in the corners of the image when shot at low f stops. This allows me to push my subjects to the edges of the frame and still maintain both critical subject sharpness and a blurred out background.

Another great feature of this lens is that it is compatible with Sigma’s USB Dock UD-01. This dock allows me to make changes in how the lens performs. For instance, I have prioritized autofocus accuracy over speed. After shooting this lens exclusively for several months I also purchased Sigma’s 35mm 1.4 Art lens as well.

The Sigma 50 1.4 is available at your local Creve Coeur Camera location for $949.99 in both Nikon and canon mounts.

The sigma USB dock UD-01 is available for $59.99 in both Nikon and canon mounts and is capable of updating any sigma Art, Sport, or Contemporary lens.

Below are photos by my co-workers who also own and love the 50mm f/1.4 Sigma Art lens.
