Photographing Indoor Sporting Events

Most indoor sporting locations suffer from poor lighting conditions; in other words, they are too dark to use fast shutter speeds to stop action. Several solutions are available in adjustable cameras: raising the ISO to higher levels than are available in the automatic modes, is the first step. Using the Shutter priority mode to select the best shutter speed for stopping action then is also an option. Lenses which let in more light will also help but tend to be expensive due to the size of the lense aperture needed. Proper metering of the main playing area will also help. This means not using the default matrix metering and switching to Spot metering. The combination of proper metering of subject area and raising the ISO will often result in faster shutter speeds being available for stop-action photos of indoor sports.
